Draw Ashfield was a residency based drawing program that aimed to allow the public to access an appreciation for the local area through honing their skills in drawing techniques. Workshops were aimed at youth, the Chinese community and also the general public. through the process of drawing the participants developed their own composite drawings which reflected their appreciation and observations of the local area. The workshops culminated in an exhibition and celebration which show cased the work of the participants. The engagement with the public through the modality of drawing allowed me access to local understanding of the area and an appreciation for local experience. From this understanding and exposure I set about to create a series of public art responses which incorporated use of the local sandstone and laser cut metal. Benevolent Guides is one of the artworks that was influenced by my connection with the Ashfield community.
